I
went to the opening of an artist named Christine Stovall in Frederick last evening. http://www.the-artists-gallery.org/artist.asp?ArtistID=9407&AKey=QW8622BJ She’s I’d say among the very best of her group in terms of her composition and use of color, and I found it very enjoyable. It is frustrating though, seeing such vitality sometimes coming so very near the complete lack of restraint that art demands and then just barely pulling away from it. It seems as though with just one little studied stroke, it can all somehow desintegrate into a self-conscious middlebrow banality. (I see it frequently in my own work) I liked nearly all of her work, which is very unusual for me. The pieces that I liked the best were the ones that sold, and that made me glad.
